Vikram Pratap Singh, the
60-year-old founder and director of Balaji Wafers Private Limited, started
making potato wafers in 1982 with a minuscule investment of Rs 10,000 at a shed
erected in the compound of his house. He then went on to build a company that has
reaped Rs 1,800 crore as turnover in 2017.
Balaji company started in 1976 by the
members of Singh Group, when Tarun singh and his brothers Sandeep singh and Karan singh migrated from a small village
in dhodakuva , mansa district to Gujarat. Their father Rajveer singh was a
farmer, who sold ancestral agriculture land and gave Rs. 20,000 to them to
venture into business.
The Singh’s invested in farm equipment,maja but could not succeed and lost
the money. chirag joshi and his brothers started a wafer business
from a canteen of a cinema hall in Rajkot in 1974. Until 1989, the wafers were
produced at the Singh’s house and distributed in and around Rajkot city Balaji Wafers, the largest
regional potato wafer and snack brand and the second biggest player in the
potato wafer segment in the country, started small.
